Today, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation, which was signed into law by Governor Youngkin, to repeal changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program. In addition, the legislation increased the allocation to $65 million per year to fund the program for the next two years. This is the first time the program has received such funding.

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia supports this action and will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the program’s long-term viability.

The following quote should be attributed to Scott Fleming, SCHEV director:

“I’m pleased to see the legislature address recent changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program included in the May 13 budget compromise. This program is so important to the families of those who sacrificed so much for our country. Today’s action ensures that any future discussion about the program will be considered in an appropriately thoughtful and transparent manner.”
